| Improved Tie-and-dye wheel |
| Cambodian weavers have mastered in the technique of tie and dye, making sure that once woven the cloth provides the desired patterns. This process takes a huge amount of time as the weaver needs to count the number of threads and pass the thread around a frame. The Projet d’Appui au Secteur de la Soie - PASS (a EU funded project), has invented this wheel to speed up this work. It is estimated that weavers save up to 30% of their time. To make it affordable to the villagers, PASS carpenters use the cheapest wood possible, with leftover wood, assembling it quickly. Though the wheel is functional, it did not have any artistic touch. Our artisans have improved the wheel in reinforcing the structure through traditional joint-making and in embellishing it with fine sculpture on all the parts of the wheel (elephant, naga, flower patterns). Natural lacquer was then applied to the structure. The work has demanded 10 days from a team of 6 people. |
